It is surprisingly easy to slip into an argument. If you disagree or feel you need to correct something that has been said, you can state a different point of view. Suddenly you are debating and then arguing. This increases resistance.

Using Socratic Questions

Instead of making statements, or giving advice to contradict resistance, Socrates, the 4th Century BC philosopher, asked questions which led the speaker to present the arguments for change themselves. These have since been called ‘Socratic questions’. Miller and Rollnick (2002) have used such questions along with reflections to turn the energy of resistance back on itself to initiate change: ‘to roll with resistance’.
